Reviews

Excellent Source Of Drinking Water

"Living in AZ, we often hike in the summertime at higher elevations. I never leave home without my Lifestraw filters, just in case things go sideways. There's usually water somewhere near where we hike, but it's quality and safety is questionable at best. With our Lifestraw filters, we can rest assured if we can find water, we can drink it!!"

In an emergency

"I didn't know there was a product capable of filtering water so that it is safe and drinkable. I haven't used it, and hope I don't have to. If I do, I have it, it's convenient, and easy to use."

Straw

"I have not used it as yet. It was purchased to use on the Appellation trail. Have it in my backpack now. I have the metal water bottle to0. That I have used. But it adds too much weight. I will use it on camping trips in the vehicle. What very impressed with the bottle."

Q&A

Can the lifestraw be used to drink water from a rain barrel with water off an old asphalt shingle roof.
LifeStraw filters are highly effective at removing bacteria, parasites, and microplastics from water. They are designed and tested to meet NSF 231 and NSF 53 standards, ensuring the removal of microbiological contaminants from freshwater sources, including individual wells, springs, and other natural water sources. When using rainwater collected directly (e.g., from a clean container during rainfall), LifeStraw products can provide safe drinking water by removing harmful microorganisms. However, if the rainwater is collected from gutters or roofs, the situation becomes more complex due to potential contamination from: Chemical Contaminants: Roof materials, such as asphalt shingles, may leach chemicals, including petroleum-based substances, into the water. LifeStraw filters are not designed to effectively remove all chemical contaminants. Heavy Metals: Debris or roofing materials might introduce heavy metals like lead or mercury into the water. LifeStraw's Home Pitchers and Dispensers are more comprehensive, as they are specifically designed to reduce bacteria, parasites, heavy metals, and chemicals, including PFAS ("forever chemicals"), chlorine, herbicides, and pesticides. For rainwater collected from roofs or gutters, it is advisable to use a multi-stage filtration system that includes activated carbon filters or reverse osmosis alongside your LifeStraw for a more thorough removal of chemicals and heavy metals.
Recently purchased a repacement LifeStraw, can I put ice cubes in the jug?
Thanks for your question. If you’re using the LifeStraw Go Bottle, you can add a few ice cubes as long as you don’t exceed the max fill line. Overfilling can cause pressure buildup or leaking, especially when the lid is closed and you're drinking through the straw. We also recommend avoiding large chunks of ice that could block the flow or damage the filter over time. Smaller cubes or chilled water are usually best. Let us know if you need anything else. We’re happy to help.
We have a 4-pack of LifeStraws our scouting group bought 1 year ago, and 4 different scouts used them. We would like to use them again for 4 different scouts. Is there a recommended way to clean them that eliminates harm from different users using them, or would you instead not recommend reuse by different individuals? Thank you.
Thanks for reaching out! Here is both how to clean and store the personal LifeStraw. 1. Disinfect the Filter Mix ¼ teaspoon of household bleach with 2 cups of clean water. Close the bottom cap and open the top cap. Pour the bleach solution into the straw through the mouthpiece, then close the top cap. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Open both caps and rinse under clean tap water for 1 minute. 2. Soak in Salt Solution Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 2 cups of clean water. Close the bottom cap. Pour the salt solution into the straw through the top until full. Pour any remaining solution into a reusable bottle or container. Store the LifeStraw in the salt solution with both caps open. 3. Store in a Cool, Dry Place Keep the container holding the salt water and LifeStraw in a cool, dry location until you're ready to use it again. 4. When You're Ready to Use It Again Blow out any remaining salt solution from the straw. Fill with your usual water source. Discard the first few sips, as they may still taste salty. Why Use Salt? Storing the filter in saline solution helps keep the membrane moist and prevents clogging, preserving the filter’s performance over time. Be sure to check that the filter is working properly before taking it out since it was used over a year ago! Let us know if you have any questions or if you'd like additional tips on care and maintenance — we're happy to help!
Where is it made
The LifeStraw is made in South Korea.
I would like to buy 20 life straws. Can I get a quite please

How long would 1 last in an emergency setting? How long would 1 last just gor regular use
The original LifeStraw Personal has a membrane microfilter that lasts for up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters) before it needs replacing. Regarding how long it would last. It would depend upon the amount of water used in each setting and for that specific amount of time.
Can the straw be used in any water bottle?
The LifeStraw can be used in various situations. As long as the LifeStraw can be placed inside the neck of the bottle, you can use it to drink water.
How long is life straw good for. Mine was made in 2014 maybe 2 gallon water used thru it?
Thank you for reaching out! The lifespan of a LifeStraw product depends on several factors, including how often it was used, how well it was maintained, and how it has been stored. Generally, LifeStraw filters are designed to last up to a certain number of liters based on typical use. If your LifeStraw was first used in 2014, its current effectiveness may vary depending on those factors. For the best results, we recommend replacing filters or the product if it has been several years since its last use, especially if it has not been consistently maintained or stored in optimal conditions. Please let us know if we can help with additional questions.
Do these straws filter out pesticides and other types of chemicals that would come off crop fields that bleed into creeks?
Please go to https://lifestraw.com/pages/compare for a full list of our products and what contaminants they remove.
I purchased a LifeStraw for emergencies. Is there anything I need to do before storing it? How long will it keep in storage?
LifeStraw products do not have an expiration date or shelf life. If they are unused and/or still in packaging, you will store them as-is, in a cool, dry place. When you are ready to use them, you would follow the steps in the manual for priming and set up. Once used, you will want to follow the long-term storage directions to ensure it is ready for your next use. To find information on set-up, priming, storage, and care, please visit the product page for the device and search under "resources" for manuals and product guides.
