Can I use the LifeStraw Sip with beverages other than water?
You can use the LifeStraw Sip with non-carbonated beverages such as clear cocktails or juice. It is preferable not to use the Sip with beverages like smoothies or juices with a lot of pulp which can clog the membrane.
-
LifeStraw Sip: Do I need to worry about dirty water in the carry case?
If you take a couple of steps before storing your LifeStraw Sip, you should not need to worry about contamination. Prior to placing the product in the carry case after use, blow out the remaining water from the filter and wipe it dry. If a small amount of residual water remains in the carry case, simply wipe the mouthpiece prior to next use. A small amount of hand sanitizer or anti-bacterial wipe is also great for wiping off the mouthpiece after a long period of storage.
-
What happens at the end-of-life for the LifeStraw Sip? Is it recyclable, refillable, etc.? Is the filter replaceable?
The filter itself is not replaceable. All pieces other than the membrane are recyclable. To recycle, remove the silicone pieces and recycle. Then, to extract the membrane from the straw, drill a hole into the bottom to loosen and remove the membrane - noting that this will damage the filter and render it unsafe so this should only be done when ready to discard the product. Recycle the stainless steel and discard the inner membrane.
Note: the product has a projected lifespan of 1,000 liters, but this is a conservative estimate based on longevity testing with dirty water and maintenance of flow rate.

How do you clean the LifeStraw Sip?
It’s simple! You just blow the water back through the straw and it backflushes the system, then give it a shake to expel any additional water.
We also recommend removing the silicone mouthpiece and bottom plug after about a week of continuous use, rinsing with soap and water and letting dry. The membrane should not be in contact with soap, as it can cause clogging.
The carry case is dishwasher safe and can be cleaned with soap and water.
Upon launch, we will include long-term storage and maintenance instructions, which also help to increase lifespan.
-
Do you need to clean the LifeStraw Sip before using it?
The first use instructions are very simple:
- Upon first use, rinse the exterior of the straw with safe drinking water.
- Place the end of the straw with the clear silicone plug into a container of water.
- Begin drinking by sipping water through the colored silicone mouthpiece. The first few sips may take more effort since the microfilter membranes need to fully hydrate.
- After you've finished drinking, it is essential to remove as much water as possible before placing the Sip into the carry case. Blow air through the mouthpiece and give the Sip a gentle shake to expel.
